How many solar panels does a UK home need?
Most UK homes need about 8 to 12 panels — a 3 to 5 kW system. That is far fewer than American guides suggest, because a typical UK household uses 2,500 kWh a year against roughly 10,800 kWh in the US.
The number that makes UK sizing different
Ofgem's typical domestic consumption value for electricity is 2,500 kWh a year, revised downwards on 1 July 2026 as households continue using less. A single 400W panel in a median UK location produces roughly 338 kWh a year, so covering that usage takes around 8 panels.
Roof space is almost never the constraint
Our measurements put the median UK roof at 113 m², fitting about 35 panels. A typical home needs roughly a quarter of that. British houses are considerably smaller than American ones, but British electricity use is smaller still — so the roof runs out long after the usage does.
This is the opposite of the American situation, and it is why UK solar advice focuses on export tariffs and batteries rather than on fitting more panels.
When you genuinely need more
Size for the usage you will have, not the usage you have now. An electric vehicle can add 2,000–3,000 kWh a year on its own, roughly doubling a typical household's demand, and a heat pump adds more again in winter — exactly when output is lowest. If either is likely within a few years, plan the array for it while the scaffolding is already up.
